Open Spaces Group Update - September 2013

Sandpit Drove Conservation Area

The wildflower meadow has after all been a success this year, despite fewer of the showy flowers that dominated last year.  At the end of August there was a good display of common bird's foot trefoil, scentless mayweed, red clover, yarrow and melilot.  Perennial weeds such as nettle, dock and burdock have been controlled by hand weeding by volunteers.  in July we held an evening wildlife walk along Sandpit Drove to look at the pond, the meadow and the woodland, with a picnic at the memorial bench.

The meadow will be ready for mowing by early September.  After drying out, the hay will be collected and baled.

Old Recreation Ground Orchard

The warm, dry weather in July meant that the newly planted fruit trees were severely tested.  Many of the cherry and pear trees showed signs of strss, and some of the pear trees suffered insect attack most likely aggravated by the drought conditions.  Our volunteers set up a watering system using donated hose pipe, enabling selective watering of the worst affected trees.  By the end of August the trees had recovered well and only one cherry tree had died.

Volunteers are very welcome at all Open Spaces Group and Woodland Group events.  For more information about the Open Spaces Group contact Richard Braund at richardbraund50@hotmail.com.
